About Bessie Smith
Bessie Smith was a celebrated American blues singer who was one of the most popular singers of the 1920s and the 1930s. She went by the title the "Empress of the Blues". Some of her best known songs include Downhearted Blues, The St. Louis Blues and Lost Your Head Blues.
Achievements
A number of her songs have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2001, her song Downhearted Blues was named one of the Songs of the Century. She has been posthumously inducted into several Halls of Fame, including the Blues Hall of Fame.
Trivia
She was involved in a very violent car accident on September 26, 1937 that left her critically injured and unconscious. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors had to amputate her right arm since it was severely damaged. She died hours later.
