About Beth Howland
American performer Beth Howland was best known for role as Vera Gorman in the comedy series “Alice”. She also played roles on several television and theatre films such as “Love, American Style”, “The Rookies” and “Little House on the Prairie”.
Family
She was married to actor Michael J. Pollard for eight years, between 1961 and 1969. They had a daughter together. She was later married to American actor Charles Kimbrough in 2002 and they remained together until her death in 2015.
Career
The actress first appeared as Lady Beth in the 1959 musical “Once Upon a Mattress”. The Massachusetts-born actress was later featured in musicals such as “High Spirits”, “The Cat!”, and “Bye Bye Birdie”.
After her feature in “Company”, she moved from New York to California, making guest appearances on television series such as “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, “Eight Is Enough”, “American Style” and “Love Boat”.
“Alice” and Golden Globe Award Nominations
Howland earned four Golden Globe Award nominations for her role in “Alice”. She would later appear in several television films like “A Caribbean Mystery”, a 1983 mystery film directed by Robert Michael Lewis. In the film, she played Evelyn Hillingdon and co-starred with Helen Hayes. In 1979, she was cast as Essie Carmichael in “You Can't Take It with You”.
She was a recurring performer on “Alice” for all its seasons, and when the series ended in 1985, she took a break, only making guest appearances in films such as “Chicken Soup for the Soul”, “Terrible Things My Mother Told Me” and starring in the “ABC Afterschool Special”.
Trivia
She appeared with her husband Kimbrough in Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Company”.
Death
The actress died on December 30, 2015 after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
