About Betty Friedan
Activist and feminist writer, Betty Friedan is acknowledged for having jointly founded the "National Organization for Women" (NOW) in 1966. Due to her active participation in feminism, her book, "The Feminine Mystique", released in 1963, is mostly credited for having orchestrated the second wave of feminism in the early 1960s.
She is known to have hosted the "Women's Strike for Equality" in 1970, a highly successful event which recorded over 50,000 participants.
Family Life
Her father, Harry Goldstein was a jewelry store owner and her mother, Miriam Horwitz was a writer. She was married to theater director, Carl Friedan between 1947 and 1969. Her children are Jonathan, Emily and American physicist, Daniel Friedan.
Achievements
She was named the "Humanist of the Year" by American Humanist Association in 1975 and was installed into the "National Women's Hall of Fame" in 1993.
The ‘American Society of Journalists and Authors’ honored her with the "Mort Weisinger Award" in 1979 and the "Eleanor Roosevelt Leadership Award" in 1989.
Death
Friedan died, on her eighty-fifth birthday, as a result of heart-related conditions.
