About Betty Shabazz
Betty Shabazz was the widow of human rights activist Malcolm X, which resulted in her being popularly called as Betty X. Aside from also being a civil rights advocate, she was also an educator, becoming a fixture at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn where she served different positions from 1976 until her death in 1997.
Education
She was originally pursuing a career in education, but switched to nursing due to the frustrations she suffered from racism. After her husband’s death, she continued her path in education and stayed there for good. She resumed her studies at the New Jersey City University (formerly Jersey City State College) in 1969 and, after completion, earned her doctorate in higher education administration and curriculum development at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1975.
