Early Life
Ivanishvili was born into a humble home and was the youngest of his 5 siblings. His father used the proceeds from his work in a manganese factory to enroll him in Tbilisi State University, where he graduated with an engineering degree in 1980. He then obtained his PhD in economics at Moscow’s University of Railway Engineering in 1982.
Business Ventures
Ivanishvili's shot to billionaire status is quite an interesting one. He started importing and selling novel computers and push-down telephones while living in Russia in the early 1990s. He also set up other revenue generators such as hotels and invested heavily in the stock market. By 2010 Ivanishvili had reached a monetary value of close to $5 billion, according to Forbes Magazine. He was thus the richest person in Georgia at the time.
Political Career
Having conquered the world of business, Ivanishvili ventured into politics and established the Georgian Dream- Democratic party in 2012; and after intense work, he was elected Prime Minister of Georgia that same year and served till 2013.
Personal Life
The billionaire married his wife Ekaterine Khvedelidze in 1991, and they have 4 children together.
Trivia
En route to becoming prime minister of Georgia, Ivanishvili defeated incumbent Vano Merabishvili in 2012.
In 2018, he was elected head of the Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party.
