About Bill George
Bill George, a pro football legend who was chosen for eight straight Pro Bowls from 1954 to 1961, is recognized as the game's first genuine middle linebacker and unwittingly credited for inventing the 4-3 system.
Career
In 1952, he made his professional football debut as a middle guard in the then-common five-man defensive front. From 1954 to 1961, he was chosen to participate in eight straight Pro Bowls. He oversaw the Bears' defense in 1963 as they won the NFL title.
He participated in the NFL for 15 seasons, spending the first 14 with the Chicago Bears and the final one with the Los Angeles Rams.
His Life
He attended Wake Forest University and was drafted in the second round by the Bears in 1951. He was killed on September 30, 1982, in a car accident in Wisconsin.
Trivia
The Bears retired his No. 61 jersey, and Wake Forest retired his No. 47 jersey.
Honors
In 1974, he was admitted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1998, he was posthumously inducted into the WFU Hall of Fame.
