About Bill Raftery
Bill Raftery, known outside the sports world as William Joseph Raftery, is a popular American basketball analyst and sports critic and fanatic.
Background
Bill was raised by an Irish Catholic family as his parents are reportedly Irish Immigrants.
Bill attended La Salle University where he earned a B.A. in history in 1963. He is also a recognized alumni of Seton Hall University where he also attained an M.A.E. in education in 1966.
Career Highlights
Bill started his coaching career in 1963 at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison. He served as the senior basketball coach from 1963 to 1968.
Moving briefly from basketball, Bill went ahead to coach golf and worked as an associate athletic director.
In 1970, Bill became the head coach of Seton Hall University, where he bagged a 154–141 record.
During his tenure, he guided the Pirates through four ECAC postseason tournaments and two National Invitational tournaments.
Awards and Achievements
In 1979, the New Jersey Sports Writers Association acknowledged Bill as “Coach of the Year”.
He was also drafted by the NSSA Hall of Fame in 2015.
Bill is a Four-time Sports Emmy Award winner for “Outstanding Sports Event Analyst”.
His 154 record of victories as a coach put him at fifth position on the all-time list at Seton Hall of fame beside great sportsmen such as Kevin Willard, Frank Hill, Honey Russell, and P.J. Carlesimo.
Trivia
In 2001, Bill was awarded an honorary doctorate from La Salle University.
Bill's son, Billy Raftery, created a documentary about his father's basketball career.
He is the former president of W.J. Raftery Associates, an event and marketing firm.
