About Bill Shankly
Bill Shankly, born William Shankly, was a professional soccer player and a soccer manager. As a player, he started his career with Carlisle United. He later joined Preston North End. He did not have many successes as a player. Later, he retired from the game due to age and became a manager instead. He made his coaching debut with Carlisle.
He also coached other minor clubs before joining Liverpool FC as their Head coach. He made an indelible mark at the team by winning the UEFA Cup and the League Championship three times. He managed Liverpool for fifteen years.
Family
He was the son of Barbara and John. He had nine siblings including John, Bobby, Jimmy, Alec, Netta, Elizabeth and Isobel. In 1944, he got married to Agnes Fischer. He had two children named Jeanette and Barbara, and six grandchildren, at the time of his passing.
Death
In 1981, he died in Liverpool.
Awards
In the 1972-1973 season, he won the Manager of the Year Award.
In 1978, he won PFA Merit Award.
