About Billy Cannon
American football halfback, fullback, and tight end Billy Cannon, aka William Abb Cannon, played professionally in the American Football League and National Football League. He was a flamboyant collegiate and pro football hero whose world came tumbling down when he was sent to prison for forging currency. For his crimes, he went in for two and a half years.
Early Life
He attended Istrouma High School and was a standout in basketball, football, and track. He is an alumnus of LSU (Louisiana State University), where he played varsity football.
Career
After 3 seasons of college football, he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Rams in November 1959. He signed a new contract with the Houston Oilers two months later. The Rams sued, claiming he was obligated by their contract and could not sign with the Houston Oilers after it was discovered he had signed with two different teams. As a rookie, he led the Oilers in rushing with 644 yards and caught five touchdown passes after joining the team.
He played in six games with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1970 on a one-year deal, receiving two touchdown passes, before suffering a season-ending injury that led him to decide to hang up his football cleats for good.
