About Billy Mitchell
Billy Mitchell dropped out from the university to become a member of the U.S. Army at a time when the Spanish-American War was ongoing. After seeing Orville Wright’s flight demonstration in 1908, Mitchell developed an interest in aircrafts and went to the Curtiss Flying School for training.
During the First World War, he commanded America’s air combat groups in France. He was later sent to the U.S. Army Air Service to work as its deputy director. Mostly described as the founder of the United States Air Force, Mitchell fought for the development of the air unit of the Army. This, coupled with his frequent arguments with heads of the United States Army, made him an unpopular figure in the service.
