The American musician is best recognized as a member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. With the band, he helped release their 1974 hit song “Sweet Home Alabama”.
Before Fame
The Texas native grew up in Italy but moved back to the US after his father’s death. He enrolled at the Sanford Naval Academy in Florida.
“Sweet Home Alabama” and Other Career Highlights
A roadie turned keyboardist, Billy Powell had his first taste of limelight as a member of the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 1973, the band got signed to MCA Records and with the success of their first album became a household name. The following year, they released “Home Sweet Alabama" which was their hottest claim to fame. The song was on the band’s second album “Second Helping”, which was released in 1974.
Powell helped guide the band to a steady stream of success before helping in the release of their fifth studio album “Street Survivors.” Shortly after this, tragedy struck. Their chartered plane crashed into a forest and claimed several lives. He survived the crash, but not without severe injuries.
Trivia
He reunited with the surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1981 and together, went on a tribute tour.
