About Blas de Lezo
A heroic character in Spain’s history, Blas de Lezo is arguably the greatest naval strategist of all-time. He started his military career in the early 1700s and played a huge role in the 1704 War of the Spanish Succession. He went on to fight many battles before he was promoted to the position of a captain in 1713.
Seven years later, he was assigned to the Pacific and was stationed there until 1728. The Spanish admiral would be remembered for his success at the 1741 Battle of Cartagena de Indias. During the conflict, he led the Spanish navy to defeat the Admiral Edward Vernon-led British fleet. He sustained many injuries during his time in the military. He lost his left hand and eye. In addition to that, de Lezo developed an issue with his right hand, and had one of his legs amputated. The injuries, according to him, were the medals of his service to the army.
