Background
Born in 1932 on a farm near Catawba in North Carolina, Isaac developed a passion for racing at a very young age. He began racing professionally in 1956 but made his NASCAR debut in 1961. By 1964, he had started enjoying some bit of success in racing driving for Dodge.
Career Highlights
This North Carolina racer finished the first runner-up in the 1968 season and won 17 races in 1969. Isaac became National Series Champion, posting 11 wins in the 1970 series.
He left the 1973 Talladega 500 mid-race in an unprecedented fashion without discussing it with the pit crew and team owner.
This racing legend was inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame in 1979 and was honored by NASCAR as one of its 50 greatest drivers in 2015.
Death
Isaac came back to racing but in a limited capacity; however, he pulled out of the race at Hickory Motor Speedway on August 13, 1977, due to heat exhaustion. He was taken to the hospital, where he recovered but only to die the next day from a heart attack.
