About Bobby Jones
Bobby Jones was a writer, amateur golfer, and lawyer from the United States of America. He was the founder and co-founder of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, respectively. As an amateur golfer, he achieved many successes making him the most decorated unprofessional golf player to compete at national and international tournaments.
He started playing golf at a very young age, winning his first children’s competition when he was 6 years old. Eight years later, Jones won the Georgia Amateur Championship which was his first major golf tournament. This landmark made him gain media popularity and an invite by the United States Golf Association to participate in the United States Amateur Championship.
His first-ever qualification to compete at the U. S. Open came in 1920 when he was eighteen years old. Three years later, he won his first U. S. Open title. In 1903, he achieved the highest height in his career by becoming the first golfer to win the Grand Slam in a single year.
Bobby Jones’ writing career
As a writer, he made his first publication in 1927 with the book “Down the Fairway” which was co-written by Oscar Bane Keeler. Other books he published include “The Rights and Wrongs of Golf”, “Bobby Jones on Golf”, and “Golf Is My Game”.
Education
He was educated at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Harvard College, and Emory University School of Law.
Family
He was the child of Clara Thomas and Robert Purmedus Jones. In 1924, he wedded Mary Rice Malone. He gave birth to three children named Mary Ellen, Robert Tyre III, and Clara Malone.
Death
He died as a result of complications from syringomyelia in 1971.
Awards
He won the 1919 Yates-Gode Tournament. In 1924 and 1925, he won the U.S. Amateur title. Also, he won both the Open Championship and the U.S. Open in 1926. The following year, Jones won the 1927 Southern Open, the Open Championship, and the U.S. Amateur title. Again, he added the 1929 U.S. Open title to his collection of achievements.
