About Booker T. Washington
Booker T. Washington was an African-American educator, author, and orator.
His Life
Washington was renowned as a leader and a voice for slaves. He was of the last generation to be born slaves. He lived in the post Civil War American South, which was plagued by Jim Crow laws. Although he was surely against such laws, he gave a famous speech saying that the best way to move past these laws is through education. This was a famous speech called the “Atlanta compromise.” Many people agreed, but some did not. This led to the formation of the NAACP, which was more active than Washington wanted.
