About Booth Tarkington
Booth Tarkington was one of the greatest American writers during the first two decades of the twentieth century. He was best known as the author of the 1921 novel titled “Alice Adams”.
His 1918 work “The Magnificent Ambersons” inspired the 2002 film of similar name which was directed by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Arau. In 1914, he published the first of the “Penrod” trilogy.
Family
His parents were Elizabeth Booth Tarkington and John S. Tarkington. He married Susanah Keifer Robinson in 1912, a year after divorcing Louisa Fletcher.
Education
He moved to Phillips Exeter Academy from Shortridge High School. Tarkington later enrolled at Purdue University and continued at Princeton University.
Achievements
In 1922, he received his second Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, becoming one of few people to win the accolade multiple times.
Trivia
He served in the Indiana House of Representatives between 1902 and 1903.
The Library of America issued a collection of his works in 2019 which was entitled “Booth Tarkington: Novels & Stories”.
