About Brendan Shanahan
Canadian hockey legend Brendan Shanahan played more than 1,500 games in the National Hockey League. He joined the league in 1987 as a member of the New Jersey Devils team. He later played for the St. Louis Blues, and the Hartford Whalers before joining the Detroit Red Wings in 1996 where he would record most of his successes. With the team, he won the Stanley Cup three times. He later moved to the New York Rangers in 2006.
International career
Shanahan was very successful with the Canadian national team. He helped his country to win the World Championships in 1994, and was an integral member of the squad that won the 2002 edition of the Winter Olympics.
Post retirement
Shanahan has not left the sport after announcing his retirement in 2009. He has served in different executive positions for many teams and organizations. In 2009, the National Hockey League appointed him as one of its vice presidents. Two years later, he was promoted to the Senior Vice President position.
After a successful tenure, he was hired by the Toronto Maple Leafs to serve as their alternate governor and president.
Family
His parents, Donal and Rosaleen, have Irish backgrounds. He was raised together with three siblings namely Danny, Shaun and Brian. He has been married to a lady called Catherine since 1998.
Education
Shanahan schooled at Catholic Central High School, and also Michael Power/St. Joseph High School.
Recognitions
In 2013, he became a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. He has also earned a place in the Triple Gold Club.
Trivia
Before retiring in 2009, he led the top-scorer chart for active NHL players.
He’s the first hockey star to record two thousand penalty minutes, and more than 600 goals.
He appeared alongside Jim Carrey in the 2000 comedy film titled “Me, Myself & Irene”.
