About Brian Kobilka
Brian Kobilka is popularly known for his role as a scientist and a psychologist. A 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner, Kobilka is also known to be part of the founders of ConfometRX, which is a biotechnology company that specializes in heptahelical receptors.
Early Years
The institutions he had his education include the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint Cloud, University of Minnesota Duluth and Yale University School of Medicine. He obtained his M.D., cum laude, from the latter. He also had his residency at Washington University School of Medicine’s Barnes-Jewish Hospital and he specialized in Internal Medicine.
From 1987 to 2003, he served as an investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHML).
Career
He gained notice as a result of his research on G coupled-protein receptors and through his laboratory, the Beta -2 adrenergic receptor molecule structure was determined. This molecule structure is considered by other scientists as an important target for pharmaceutical therapeutics.
Major Accomplishments and Triumphs
His research has landed him a number of awards and they include: he received the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, which is a John J. Abel Award in Pharmacology in 1994. Also, he and Robert Lefkowitz were joint recipients of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2012.
Personal Life
He married Tong Sun Thian and they both have children namely Jason and Megan Kobilka.
Trivia
He became a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2011.
