About Bruno Bettelheim
Bruno Bettelheim was an Austrian-American psychologist whose works were mainly about the behavioral and emotional disorders of children. Between 1944 and 1973, he worked with the Sonia Shankman Orthogenic School as the director. He was one of the first scholars to publish a literature on autism, and was also the originator of the “Refrigerator mother theory”, which is sometimes referred to as “Bettelheim's theory of autism”.
As an educationist, he taught at a number of tertiary institutions including Stanford University, and the University of Chicago. Bettelheim also published some educational books such as 1976’s “The Uses of Enchantment” and “Love Is Not Enough: The Treatment of Emotionally Disturbed Children”.
Family
He lost his dad when he was in university. Bettelheim divorced Gina Alstadt before tying the knot with Gertrude Weinfeld in 1941. The couple had three kids.
Education
The famous psychologist was a graduate from the University of Vienna.
Awards
He was honored with the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award for his work “The Uses of Enchantment”. In 1971, he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Trivia
He was accused of plagiarism in 1991.
He was also known for his frequent appearances on the talk show titled “The Dick Cavett Show”.
