Burt Metcalfe, birth name Burton Denis Metcalfe, is a veteran American Canadian TV and film director and producer. He is widely known as a producer and writer for the famous CBS series “M*A*S*H,” which ran for over a decade (1972 to 1983).
Early Life & Navy
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, is his hometown. At age 17, and in 1957, he was enlisted into the US Navy. He served for two years and was stationed at the “Riem Fielm, San Ysidro '' in California.
Career Highlights
In 1959, he landed a minor role as the character of Lord Byron in the movie “Gidget.” After that, he starred as Tom Easton in “Indian Emily” – an episode in the anthological series, “Death Valley Days.”
During the 1960s, he appeared in several films and TV series, notably “The Twilight Zone,” “Perry Mason,” and NBC’s sitcom “Happy.”
“M*A*S*H” – a CBS series which ran between 1972 and 1983, is arguably his most famous work. Aside from writing for the series, he was the only producer who stayed with the series throughout its run. He earned 13 Primetime Emmy Award nominations for writing on “M*A*S*H.”
Marriage
He married Toby Harry Shipman in 1961, and they divorced in 1968. In 1979, he married Jan Jorden, an actress famously known for her role in “M*A*S*H.”
