About Burton Lane
Burton Lane, born Burton Levy, was a phenomenal 20th-century American lyricist and composer. He was revered for his success in writing for both motion pictures and Broadway. In the 1950s and 1960s, he was the president of the “American Guild of Authors and Composers.”
Background & Early Life
Lane was introduced to music during childhood, and by age 13, he had learned classical piano. In 1927, at age 15, he signed a deal with the “Remick Music Company” and began his professional music career.
Career Highlights
His earliest career highlight came in 1929 when he performed his tunes to the great lyricists Ira Gershwin and George Gershwin.
In the 1930s, he composed many songs for various musical revues, including “Three’s a Crowd,” “Singing in the Rain,” “Vanities,” and “The Third Little.”
He wrote music for over 30 movies, notably “Babes on Broadway,” “Everything I Have is Yours,” and “Dancing Lady.” He was also a revered Broadway musical writer, penning for productions such as “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever,” which won him a Grammy Award for “Best Broadway Cast Album” in 1965.
