About Byron De La Beckwith
Byron De La Beckwith gained notoriety as the murderer of Medgar Evers, an African American civil rights activist. De La Beckwith was a white supremacist and a member of the Mississippi branch of the all-white hate group, the Ku Klux Klan. Following the murder on June 12, 1963, he was arrested and tried twice but the outcomes of both were hung juries.
He spent close to three years in prison in the 1970s for attempted murder after he was arrested on his way to murder a Jewish activist, A.I. Botnick. In 1994, Evers’ wife, Myrlie got his case reopened and De La Beckwith was successfully tried and convicted.
Family Life
He lost his father, Byron De La Beckwith Sr. when he was five and his mother, Susan Yerger died when he was 12. From 1946 to 1960, he was married to Mary Louise Williams, with whom he had one son. His second wife was Thelma Neff.
Prison Sentence and Death
He was handed a life imprisonment sentence in February 1994. He spent almost seven years in prison before his death on January 21, 2001.
