About Byron Scott
Byron Scott, born Byron Antom Scott, is one of the esteemed legends of American basketball history. He starred in the NBA from 1983 to 1997 and has over 15 years of coaching experience in the NBA.
Background & College Career
He is a native of Inglewood, California. He attended Morningside High School. In 1979, he enrolled in Arizona State University, where he played college basketball for the Sun Devils for three years.
Professional Career
During the 1983 NBA draft, San Diego Clippers picked him in the first round. However, he was later traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. He played ten consecutive NBA seasons (1983 to 1993) with the Lakers. Scott was part of the “Showtime era” Lakers teams that won the 1985, 1987, and 1988 NBA championships. He then played for Indiana Pacers and Vancouver Grizzlies, after which he returned to the Lakers for his final NBA season, 1996-97 season.
He retired in 1998 after playing the 1997-98 season with Panathinaikos in the Greek Basket League.
Coaching Career
Between 1998 and 2000, he was the assistant coach of the Sacramento Kings. He has been the head coach of the New Jersey Nets (2000–2004), New Orleans Hornets (2004–2009), Cleveland Cavaliers (2010–2013), and Los Angeles Lakers (2014–2016).
He was the 2008 NBA coach of the year and the NBA All-Star Game head coach in 2002 and 2008.
