About Cafu
Cafu is undoubtedly one of Brazil’s soccer legends. He has rightfully earned a legendary status for himself in the sport during his illustrious playing career. Mostly utilized as a full back, Cafu was noted for his amazing pace and technical skills. His energy combined with his tactical brilliance saw him contribute a lot to the teams he featured for. He can easily be defined as one of the best full backs the game has ever seen.
Club Career
The Brazilian soccer icon spent his youth career, beginning in 1988, with São Paulo, a club in his hometown. Within a short time, he graduated to the club's senior team and became a prominent player for the club. He joined Real Zaragoza, a Spanish club in 1995 before returning to Brazil to play for Palmeiras. He spent two seasons with the Brazilian outfit before he signed for Italian team AS Roma.
He became an AC Milan player in 2003.
International Career
One of the highlights of his career includes being the most capped Brazilian soccer player. Between 1990 and 2006 he played in 142 games for Brazil’s national team. His first appearance for Brazil was in a friendly encounter against Spain in September 1990.
Achievements
He is often regarded as one of the most decorated players the sport has ever seen. This is supported by his numerous awards and titles won.
While playing for São Paulo he was named South American Footballer of the Year, an award he received in 1994. He also won two Copa Libertadores with the club.
He won the Italian Serie A while playing for AS Roma and AC Milan. With the latter, he won many more trophies including the UEFA Champions League and EUROPA League.
With the Brazilian national team, Cafu won his first World Cup title in 1994. His second was in 2002, in which he captained the team.
In 2004 he was included in FIFA 100, a list compiled by his countryman and soccer icon Pelé.
In 2020 the Brazil star made it to the Ballon d'Or Dream Team. This list, prepared by France Football, also includes soccer icons like Franz Beckenbauer, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pelé, and Diego Maradona.
Facts
Fans in Italy likened Cafu’s blistering pace to the express trains in the country. Therefore they nicknamed him “Pendolino”.
