About Cal Ripken Jr.
Cal Ripken Jr. left a legacy in Major League Baseball as one of the league’s all-time greatest players and shortstops. Having earned the nickname “The Iron Man”, he played in the MLB for 21 seasons (1981-2001) with the Baltimore Orioles which drafted him in 1978, right out of high school.
Prior to starting in the shortstop position in 1982, he had played as a third baseman in the MLB. He has been the record holder of the highest number of consecutive games played in the history of the MLB.
Family Life
Cal Ripken Sr., who served the Baltimore Orioles organization for 36 years in the capacities of player, scout, coach and manager was his father. His mother’s name was Violet Roberta Gross. His brother, Billy also played in the MLB. They had two other siblings.
His first marriage (1987-2016) to Kelly Greer produced two kids. He got married to Laura S. Kiessling in 2018.
Achievements
For 19 consecutive seasons, he played as an All-Star. In 2007, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
