About Camille Desmoulins
Camille Desmoulins was an iconic French journalist and a political pamphleteer who played a salient role in the French Revolution.
Background
Cammile grew up in Northern France. His father was an influential man who held a position akin to a county sheriff. He had admission to study classical literature and politics at the Collège Louis-le-Grand in Paris and later studied law.
The French advocate married Lucile Duplessis and they had a child together.
Political Career
Early in his political career, he was admitted as a lawyer into the French parliament. Owing to a bad stammer and a disposition towards aggression, this role was short-lived.
His instinct and drive for politics however remained unabated. The radical statesman turned his focus to writing political essays and articles. Cammile’s first notable work, a radical republican pamphlet – “La France Libre”— appeared on the streets of Paris in 1789.
The advocate and revolutionist addressed a large crowd in front of the royal palace a day after the crown dismissed its finance minister, a character who was perceived as a progressive reformer; where he spoke aggressively against the crown.
Cammile, along with Georges Danton, founded the Cordeliers Club, which was influential in the republican petitions in 1791; which called for the execution of the French king. They later openly challenged the centralization of power by the National Convention as well as Robespierre and his Committee of Public Safety; which were the authorities of the day subsequent to the fall of the monarchy.
Death
Cammile was accused, summarily tried and executed along with Danton in April 1794.
