About Canaletto
Canaletto, born Giovanni Antonio Canal, was a prominent Italian painter known for his numerous vedutes. Considered one of the top Venetian artists during the 18th Century, he painted the landscape of cities like London, Rome and his native Venice.
With the help of Joseph Smith, a successful merchant, he was able to sell most of his works to King George III. Some of his most popular oeuvres were titled “The Piazzetta towards San Giorgio Maggiore” and “Piazza San Marco Looking East along the Central Line”.
Family
He was one of the sons of Bernardo Canal, a renowned painter.
Trivia
Some of his paintings have appeared in centers like the Musée des beaux-arts de Brest in France, and New York’s Morgan Library and Museum.
In 2012, his print titled “S. A. Giustina in Prà della Vale” appeared in the Munich Art Hoard.
His works featured some historical structures like the Alnwick Castle and the Warwick Castle.
He was inspired by Giovanni Paolo Pannini.
