Background
Spaatz was born in Boyertown, Philadelphia to Anna and Charles Spaatz. He enrolled at the US Military Academy and graduated in 1914. The newly-commissioned second lieutenant of Infantry served at the Schofield Barracks from 1914-1915. He was later detailed at the Aviation School.
Wars
Spaatz was promoted to first lieutenant a few weeks before the start of World War I, where he shot down three enemy planes. He also fought in World War II, playing a key role in a well-planned bombing campaign against Germany.
Later Years and Death
For his service to the nation, President Harry Truman promoted Spaatz to the rank of general and in 1947, was made chief of staff of the US Air Force. He retired from the military the following year and spent his later years serving on boards and committees.
Spaatz passed away in 1974 and was survived by his wife Ruth and three children.
