Early Life
Walz graduated from Charles F. Brush High School in 1973 and later enrolled in Kent State University, where he graduated with a degree in physics in 1977. He later went on to attain a master's degree from John Carroll University in 1979.
Career
Walz's first professional role after graduating was to analyze radioactive samples from the United States Atomic Energy Detection System from 1979 to 1982. He later joined the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, where he studied as a flight test engineer from 1984 to 1987. The astronaut also took the position of a Flight Test Manager from 1987 to 1990.
NASA Career
The astronaut was selected by NASA to embark on various space flights in 1990. Walz embarked on the STS-51 discovery mission in 1993, where he was a mission specialist at the time. He also took on the role of the Orbiter flight engineer on the STS-65 space shuttle program in 1994. Waltz was also a mission specialist on STS-79 in 1996 and a flight engineer on ISS Expedition 4 from 2001 to 2002.
Personal Life
The astronaut tied the knot with Pamela J. Glady.
