About Carl Perkins
Carl Perkins’ songs have been described as a personification of the rockabilly style of rock and roll music.
Active from 1946 as a local tavern entertainer alongside his brother Jay, the singer-songwriter performed as an irregular member of the band, Tennessee Ramblers on Radio in the late 1940s before he would eventually debut as a recording artist under Sun Records in 1954.
His hit singles include “Matchbox”, “Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby” and “Blue Suede Shoes”.
Family Life
His parents, Louise and Buck Perkins were poor sharecroppers in Tiptonville, Tennessee. Besides Jay, he had another brother, Carlton, who would later join them to perform in taverns. He was married to Valda Crider, with whom he had three sons and a daughter.
Achievements
He has been a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
Death
He died on 19 January 1998 from throat cancer.
