About Carl Van Vechten
Carl Van Vechten established himself as one of the most prominent Harlem Renaissance writers when he published his book titled “Peter Whiffle” in 1922. He was best known for his 1926 controversial book entitled “Nigger Heaven”, which was criticized by some renowned scholars like W. E. B. Du Bois and Countee Cullen.
Throughout his career, he published over a dozen books which included 1925’s “Firecrackers. A Realistic Novel”.
Family
His parents were Ada Amanda and Charles Duane Van Vechten. Between 1907 and 1912, he was married to Anna Snyder. Two years after his divorce, he tied the knot with Fania Marinoff, a popular actress.
Education
He attended Washington High School and furthered at the University of Chicago.
Facts
Vechten also worked as a photographer and took pictures of some popular personalities like Antony Armstrong-Jones, and James Baldwin.
He had a close relationship with American writer Gertrude Stein.
