Carl Michael Yastrzemski, who goes by the nickname ‘Yaz’, is a Baseball Hall of Famer who played for the Boston Red Sox for almost 24 years of his life.
Early life
His parents were Carl Yastrzemski, Sr.and Hattie Skonieczny. Yastrzemski was born in Southampton, New York, USA. His family was originally from Poland.
Yastrzemski attended Bridgehampton School, where he graduated in 1957. At school, he was a member and prominent player of Little League Baseball. After earning a basketball scholarship, he studied at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
Personal life
Carl had a son named Carl Michael Yastrzemski Jr., popularly known as Mike who was also a professional baseball player, who died from a blood clot after having hip surgery at age 43 in 2004.
His grandson, Mike Yastrzemski, got drafted by the Red Sox in 2009.
Career
In 1961, Yastrzemski made his career debut in the major league where he hit his first home run. At the time, it was always his desire to be as successful in position as the great Red Sox legend Ted Williams.
Considering the fact that he won the American League Triple Crown, Yastrzemski had one of his best seasons in the league in 1967 with a .326 batting average, 44 home runs, and 121 RBIs. His win was the last time a major league hitter ever took the Crown until Miguel Cabrera was able to beat his record in 2012.
Retirement
Yastrzemski ended his career and retired at the age of 44 in 1983.
Notable Honors
Carl Yastrzemski featured in the Major League Baseball All-Star 18 times.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Yastrzemski won the Gold Glove Award seven times.
His exploits with the Boston Red Sox meant that his jersey number, number 8, was retired in 1989. This was done to honor his lifelong commitment to the Red Sox.
In 1999, The Sporting News ranked him 72 on the list of 100 Greatest Baseball Players of all time.
