Gambino took charge of the Anastasia crime family (originally the Mangano family) following the murder of Albert Anastasia in 1957 and renamed it the Gambino crime family, which has become one of the top five organized crime families in New York City. He also became the boss of The Commission, the American Mafia’s governing body.
