About Carlos Saura
Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura directed the movies “La Noche oscura”, “Bodas de Sangre”, “Sweet Hours” and “Carmen”. For his work in the latter, he won a BAFTA Award for the category of “Best Foreign Language Film” in 1983.
Family and Education
He was born to Antonio Saura Pacheco and Fermina Atares Torrente. He had seven siblings, with one of them being Spanish artist and writer Antonio Saura Atares. He had no background of formal education but he was taught how to read by a priest.
He was married three times. His third marriage was to Eulalia Ramon, whom he married in 2006. He had seven children.
Career
The movies he produced were mostly based on his experience he garnered during war. The Spanish filmmaker started with documentary shooting in 1955.
His debut movie “Cuenca” was released in 1962 which was widely accepted by the audience. Three years later, he gained international recognition when he received the Silver Bear during the Berlin International Film Festival for his movie “La Caza”. His most recognized movies include “Ana and the Wolves”, “La Prima Angelica” and “Goya in Bordeaux”.
Awards
Saura received numerous awards and nominations as a result of his excellent works. Examples of these awards are:
- He won the Camerimage Special Award in 1998 for “Film Direction with a Special Visual Sensitivity and in 2009
- He won the Cinematographer-Director Duo Award.
- The filmmaker also received awards from Golden Globe, European Film and Goya Awards.
Trivia
He received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 at the 18th International Film Festival of Kerala.
