About Carolyn Kizer
Carolyn Ashley Kizer was her full name, and she was one of the most brilliant American poets during her lifetime. A Pulitzer Prize winner, she authored numerous poems and publications, and her works primarily reflected her staunch beliefs in feminism.
Background & Education
She was born in Spokane, Washington, to a socially prominent and well-educated couple. She stated that she could not recollect a day in her childhood when she did not read a book. This upbringing provided her with the perfect foundation for a poetry career.
She attended Lewis and Clark High School and earned various degrees at Sarah Lawrence College, Columbia University, and the University of Washington.
Career & Major Works
At age 17, “The New Yorker” published her poem. She also attended creative writing lessons by famous poet Theodore Roethke in 1954. In 1959, she contributed to the formation of “Poetry Northwest.”
She became director of Literary for the National Endowment for the Arts in 1966. In the 1980 and 1970s, she was a lecturer or a “poet-in-residence” at several universities across the USA. She earned a Pulitzer prize in 1985 for her poetry “Yin.”
In 1995, she was appointed as Chancellor of the “Academy of American Poets.”
Death
She died of dementia at age 88 on October 9, 2014.
