About Casey Jones
Casey Jones was the nickname of John Luther Jones, an American locomotive engineer and railroad worker who worked for the Illinois Central Railroad (IC). He got his start in the railroad industry with the Mobile & Ohio Railroad where he rose through the ranks to become a fireman.
In 1891, three years after joining IC, he got promoted to locomotive engineer. He is remembered best for sacrificing himself in a train wreck instead of abandoning it and causing the death of his passengers.
Family Life
He lived in Jackson, Tennessee with his wife, Mary Joanna Brady and their three children.
Train Collision and Death
On April 30, 1900, he crashed into a broken down train on his line, while unaware of its state, in Vaughan, Mississippi. Although he had been alerted and could have jumped out to save himself, he decided to save the passengers instead at the cost of his own life.
