About Cecil Beaton
Cecil Beaton, in full Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton, was a famous British photographer, designer, painter and diarist of the 20th century. He was best known for his sophisticated photographs of elite societies and his black-and-white pictures characterized by imaginative backgrounds and sets.
Background & Education
He was born in Hampstead, London. He attended St Cyprian’s School, Eastbourne and Heath Mount School. During his childhood, he often took pictures of his mother and sisters with a Kodak-3A Camera belonging to his nanny.
He later enrolled at Harrow School and then transferred to St John’s College, where he read art, history and architecture. However, throughout college, he worked a side job as a photographer and was able to feature one of his portraits in “Vogue” magazine.
Major Works & Honors
In 1958 and 1964, he won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for his works in “Gigi” and “My Fair Lady”. Additionally, in 1964, his works in “My Fair Lady” earned him the Academy Award for Best Art Direction.
He was the recipient of the Tony Award for Best Costume Design in 1960, 1957 and 1970 for “Saratoga”, “My Fair Lady” and “Coco.”
Death
He died at age 76 on 18 January 1980, at the Reddish House, Wilt.
