Background
Born in Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, Brazil, his earliest athletic exploits were at small swimming clubs in his hometown. He emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 18 to study at the Auburn University.
Career Accomplishments
He rose to prominence during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where he ranked third on the 100 free. In the 2009 World Championships in Rome witnessed, he came tops in the sprint double, heralding his performance with a world record in the 100. Two years later, he defended his freestyle title at the World Championships, where he also won the 50 meter butterfly.
Honors
He was once voted “Best Athlete of the Decade" by Sport Life Magazine. In 2009, he was named “Best Ibero-American Athlete.”
