About César Vallejo
César Vallejo was a Peruvian poet and journalist. César was once referred to as the "the greatest universal poet since Dante".
Background
César grew up in a small town in central Peru, surrounded by a highly religious family.
The seasoned journalist dropped out of college multiple times due to lack of funds to work in the accounts department of a large sugar factory. He eventually graduated with a bachelor’s degree in literature in 1915.
Literary Accomplishments
César started writing poems in 1913. Only 6 years later he published his first poetry collection – “Los Heraldos Negros” [translated “The Black Messengers”]. Soon after, a bout of personal crisis hit the literary genius – he lost his job, his mother, and his freedom.
Following the wake of these mishaps and in the bowels of prison, his second poetry collection was born – “Trilce”. This collection was reported to be in a league of its own – significantly more passionate and rawer than the last; advancing a writing style that was way ahead of its time.
Later and out of jail, the prolific writer travelled to Spain; later to Russia; and then returned to France. All this time, more literary works in fiction, plays, articles and more poems poured out of him.
Marriage
In 1934, he tied the knot with Georgette Philippart in a marriage shrouded in controversy for a long time.
Following his death, 2 more collections were published posthumously – “España, Aparta de Mí Este Cáliz” and “Poemas Humanos”.
Death
In 1938, César died in Paris at the age of 46; supposedly from Malaria.
