Cesare Maldini was regarded as one of the greatest defenders of his generation and one of Italy's all-time top defenders.
Family and Background
His parents were Albino Maldini and Maria Vodeb. He got married to Maria Luisa in 1962 and they had six children. His son, Paolo, also played as a defender with Milan and for Italy’s senior team.
Career
He began his football career in 1952 with the local team Triestina and made his Serie A entrance on May 24, 1953, during his first season with the team.
He also played for AC Milan in 1954, where he was recognized as a prominent figure in the club and went on to chalk up several domestic and international successes.
Maldini later participated in the 1962 FIFA World Cup with Italy, making two appearances in the tournament.
The versatile defender retired from playing and started his coaching career in 1970 as an assistant manager of AC Milan. Two years later, he was appointed manager of the team. From 1974 to 1998, the former defender managed a number of clubs, including Parma, Foggia and Ternana.
He managed Italy’s Under-21 side from 1986 to 1996. He managed Italy’s senior side from 1996 to 1998.
His last managerial stint came from 2001 to 2002 when he managed Paraguay.
Achievements
From 1960 to 1963, Maldini played 14 times for Italy's national football team. He was the team’s captain from 1962 to 1963.

He only had five yellow cards and was dismissed from a game once.
