About Chandra Shekhar Azad
Chandra Shekhar Azad was just a teenager when he decided to participate in revolutionary activities in India against British rule. Having first been arrested at just 15 years old in 1921 for joining Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement, he later found solace in the then-newly formed Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) for which he would raise funds by involving himself in government property robberies.
After the main leaders of the HRA were killed by the British, he reorganised it in 1928 as the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).
Family Life
His birth name was Chandra Shekhar Tiwari. He began self-identifying as Azad (translated as “The Free”) after his arrest in 1921. His parents’ names were Sitaram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi.
Death
Following the betrayal of former HSRA comrade Veerbhadra Tiwari who disclosed his location to the police, he was ambushed by the latter on 27 February 1931 at the then-Alfred Park (later re-named as Chandrashekhar Azad Park), he committed suicide by shooting himself.
