About Charles Baudelaire
Charles Baudelaire was a French poet and art critic best remembered for his controversial volume of poetry Les Fleurs du mal (The Flowers of Evil) published in 1857. His other notable works include La Fanfarlo, Les paradis artificiels and Le Spleen de Paris. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest of nineteenth-century French poets whose works contributed significantly in the symbolist and modernist movements. He was also one of the most prominent translators of Edgar Allan Poe.
Family Life
He was the only child of Caroline and François Baudelaire. After his father's death in 1827, his mother married Lieutenant Colonel Jacques Aupick. He never married nor had any children. He had a mistress, a Haitian-born actress and dancer named Jeanne Duval, who was rejected by his family.
Trivia
He coined the term "modernity" in his essay The Painter of Modern Life.
