About Charles Booth
Charles Booth was a British shipowner, social reformer and social researcher. He is best remembered for his research on the lives of London’s working class in the latter part of the 19th century. He has been acknowledged for influencing early 20th century public policy on poverty through interventions such as free school meals and Old Age Pensions. He is known best for his book, “Life and Labour of the People in London”.
Family Life
He was the son of a prominent shipowner, Charles Booth and his wife, Emily Fletcher. He joined the shipping business through his father and worked in the field until his 1912 retirement. He was married to Mary Macaulay, who bore him seven children and also served as his business advisor.
Death
He died from a stroke on November 23, 1916.
