About Charles D. Walker
As a Payload Specialist for the McDonnell Douglas Corporation, American engineer and astronaut Charles David "Charlie" Walker flew on three Space Shuttle flights in 1984 and 1985. Despite never having worked for NASA, he has participated in two of the agency's most significant space initiatives in recent decades and is the first non-government individual to fly in space.
Education
He graduated from Bedford High School and went on to Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering. His honorary doctorate in science was conferred by the St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
Career
In 1977, he joined McDonnell Douglas Corporation as a test engineer on the Aft Propulsion Subsystem for Space Shuttle orbiters.
On Space Shuttle missions 41D, 51D, and 61B, he traveled 8.2 million miles and spent 20 days in space with the McDonnell Douglas CFES equipment. He served as the EOS commercialization project's Chief Test Engineer and Payload Specialist from 1979 - 1986.
He has written papers and comments on space development and history, and editorials and pieces that have appeared in national media and periodicals.
