About Charles Edward Stuart
Charles Edward Stuart, also referred to as “the Young Pretender” and “Bonnie Prince Charlie”, enjoyed a privileged life as a member of the royal house of Scotland known as House of Stuart.
As the grandson of the deposed King of England, Ireland and Scotland, James II and VII, he was also a pretender to the British throne.
In view of this, he was in support of restoring his father to the throne and is known for his participation in the unpopular Jacobite rising of 1745. He is particularly remembered for causing the failure of the movement.
Family Life
His father was James Francis Edward Stuart and his mother’s name was Maria Clementina Sobieska. He had an illegitimate child (who died after a year) through an affair with Marie Louise de La Tour d’Auvergne.
He also had a daughter through a relationship with Clementina Walkinshaw, his mistress. He finally got married in 1772 to Princess Louise of Stolberg-Gedern.
Death
He died on January 30, 1788, from a stroke.
