Barnstorming was a popular sport in the 1900s and Charles Fern, the American aviator, and newspaper pioneer was one of its main flyers. Fern made his name known for helping advance newspaper journalism in the United States.
Career
Fern began his career as a stunt pilot in barnstorming with his partner, Ben Stoddard in 1919. He entertained passengers by ferrying them across islands in Hawaii for a fee. After forming his first Kauai barefoot football league in 1927, he found passion in journalism and invested his resources into building Kauai's first radio station, KOWY. He also published his first newspaper called “the Cow Eye Sentinel", which provided weekly updates for soldiers and people around his environs during World War II. The journalist also set up a daily newspaper called The Garden Island.

The journalist married Mary Gillespie in 1922.
