About Charles Gounod
Charles Gounod was a French composer, musicologist and organist. He was born into a family that loved arts and music.
Early life, Influence and Education.
He studied at Conservatoire de Paris Lyceé St Louis. He traveled to Austria, Italy and Prussia where he learnt more music arts and also met influential people like Felix Mendelssohn.
He was influenced by renowned composers such as Italian Gioachino Rossini and Salzburg-born Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He also took the musical instruction that his mother gave at home. Furthermore, Beethoven's pastoral and choral symphonies had great influence on Gounod. Similarly, French composers like Pierre Zimmerman and Fromental Halevy also played a vital role in his training. The former tutored Gounod on the piano.
He had private music studies with Anton Reicha while in school.
Charles Gounod’s Compositions
Gounod wrote twelve operas. Some popular ones are "Faust", "Rome et Juliette", "Ave Maria" and "Funeral March".
He composed the famous "Agnus Dei" in 1838 to commemorate his teacher Jean Lesueur.
Awards and Legacy
With his cantata Fernand, Charles Gounod won the 1839 Prix de Rome. The award is one of France’s most distinguished musical honors.
His compositions have tremendously influenced later French composers.
