About Charles Gwynn
Charles Gwynn dedicated four decades of his life to service in the British Army. He first joined the army in 1889 as a second lieutenant and rose through the ranks to become a Major General. He also became known as an explorer, geographer and author who specialized in the history and theory of the military. His publications include “Imperial Policing London” and “The Frontiers of Abyssinia”.
Family Life
His father, John Gwynn was the Regius Professor of Divinity at Trinity College in Dublin. His mother’s name was Lucy Josephine O’Brien and she was Irish nationalist William Smith O’Brien’s daughter. His marriage to Mary Armstrong from 1904 until her death in 1951 did not produce any children.
Achievements
He was conferred with honors such as the Distinguished Service Order, the Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and the Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George.
