Charles J. Guiteau was a lawyer and writer who became notorious for killing US President James A. Garfield in 1881. He was an American disillusioned office seeking with messianic delusions.
Why did Charles J. Guiteau assassinate James A. Garfield?
Guiteau, known to be self-centered, thought he earned opportunities and rewards of consulship for his role in the president’s electoral victory and his administration had turned down all of his bids to serve in Paris or Vienna, so the grieving Guiteau decided to assassinate the president.
How did he do it?
He shot him with a British bulldog revolver twice in the back and later attempted to escape but was apprehended by a massive crowd. The president was seriously wounded, and after two months, he died from diseases caused by his wounds.
Charles J. Guiteau’s reasons for the murder
He claimed he murdered the President because of his treachery, and that what he did was "political necessity," not murder. Guiteau was found guilty of the crime and was given the death penalty, which he received two days before the one-year anniversary of the killing.
