About Charles Reed Bishop
This American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and banker was heavily involved in the political and cultural life of Hawaiians. He established Hawaii's first profitable bank, currently known as First Hawaiian Bank.
Early Life
Charles Reed Bishop’s first introduction to business came when the biggest company in Warrensburg, New York, Nelson J. Warren, hired him as a clerk. The young Reed Bishop had just graduated from school and was eager to learn the ropes in the world of business. He oversaw the post office, lumber yard, and farm and developed into a bartering guru.
In 1850, he tied the knot with Bernice Pauahi Paki, a member of the Kamehameha Royal House.
Career
He bought a sugar plantation in Hawaii and worked as Collector General of Customs from 1849 to 1853. He subsequently formed a commercial shipping firm with a man named William Aldrich. He later began to offer financial services. In 1858, when his business partner Aldrich left the shipping industry, Bishop and Co. was established as a joint venture. This was the first bank to be chartered in Hawaii, a precursor of the BNP Paribas Group.
From 1859 - 1891, he served in the Privy Council for five Hawaiian monarchs, and was named to the House of Nobles by King Kamehameha IV.
